Veterans, Active-Duty Military, and Retired Service Members
Veterans, active-duty military, and retired service members in Ohio can obtain a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) license without paying fees and, in many cases, bypassing the training requirement by showing proof of prior military firearms training. Ohio is a permitless carry state for qualified adults, but official, free licenses are available for veterans.
- Fee Waiver: Eligible personnel can have the fee waived for new or renewed licenses by presenting a DD-214 or county-issued veteran ID card.
- Training Waiver: Proof of military service often acts as a substitute for the mandatory 8-hour CCW training class.
- Eligibility: Must be an honorable discharge, retired, or active-duty member.
- Process: Applications must be made through a local County Sheriff's office.
Ohio CCW Licensing Details
- Permitless Carry: Anyone 21+ who is legally allowed to possess a gun can carry, but a license is still useful for reciprocity with other states.
- Application: Required at a sheriff's office (must be the county of residence or an adjacent county).
- Background Check: Even if training is waived, all applicants must pass a background check.
