LOGAN — Robert E. "Bob" McManaway, 63, of
Logan, Ohio, went to be with the Lord Saturday,
Jan. 14, 2006, at his residence.
He was born July 29, 1942, in Powhatan Point,
Ohio, the son of Robert H. McManaway and Gladys
Exline McManaway, both of Logan. He was married
to Sharon McManaway, who survives.
He was a Hocking County deputy sheriff for 31
years; and a member of the Isaac Walton League,
the Fish and Gun Club; and attended the
Christian Fellowship Church. Bob was a veteran
of the United States Navy and served during the
Vietnam War.
Also surviving are a son Brian (Larrisa)
McManaway of Logan; two daughters, Melodee
(Jarrod) Hawk of Hamden, Ohio, and Tiffany
McManaway of Logan; five grandchildren, Brian
Keith Jr., and Zachary McManaway, Jacob and
Jordan Hawk, and Malik Jackson; and one brother,
Gene (Roberta) Morgan of Logan.
Bob is preceded in death by an infant daughter,
Christy D'Ann McManaway; and a brother, Jimmy
McManaway.
Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, Jan. 18,
at the Cardaras Funeral Home, 183 E. Second St.,
Logan, with the Rev. Jeff Snodgrass officiating.
Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan, where
military graveside services were conducted
by the Combined Veterans Burial Detail of
Hocking County.

LOGAN — It was a somber day in the Hocking County
Sheriff's Office Monday. Members of the sheriff's
department were mourning the loss of a fellow officer.
Deputy Robert E. "Bob" McManaway died unexpectedly of
natural causes at his home on Saturday. "He was a
reliable employee, a very devoted and dedicated officer,
just a good person to be around," said Sheriff Lanny
North.
McManaway was commissioned as a special deputy for the
Hocking County Sheriff's Department in January 1975 and
began full-time employment in September 1975. North
began working full time for the department in November
1975. "I've known him personally for 31 years," North
said. "Bob was pretty open about his thoughts. You
always knew what was on his mind. He never complained
about the risks that go with the job. He came to work
every day and seldom called off sick. He had a
tremendous sense of humor."
In addition to Sheriff North's tenure, McManaway served
under three other administrations, those of Paul "Puffy"
Hartman, Paul "Hap" Thrush and Jim Jones. Former Hocking
County Sheriff Jones had known McManaway since 1976. "He
was an exemplary officer, always concerned about the
citizens of the county," Jones said. "He'll be sorely
missed."
Throughout his 31 years of service, McManaway performed
all duties involved in law enforcement functions. "I
remember in the '70s when we were investigating a
stabbing in Carbon Hill," North said. "The suspect had
thrown the knife away along Route 278. Bob spend hours
walking along 278 and finally found the weapon."
North said that McManaway had retired "in paperwork
only" in Dec. 2003. He officially retired in March 2005,
and the department held a recognition get-together for
him on March 14 of that year. "I presented him with a
certificate of appreciation and a gold watch. The
deputies gave him a gift card," North said.
Though the deputy had plenty of hobbies — hunting,
target shooting, riding his motorcycle — retirement
didn't seem to suit McManaway. He came back to the
department to work part time in October 2005,
transporting prisoners to the Southeastern Ohio Regional
Jail in Nelsonville and other institutions.
Personal friend and Deputy Ryan Gabriel said, "Bob came
to work everyday, whistling away. He had this special
bird whistle he'd do. You always knew when he came in."
Gabriel added, "Bob had been here so long, going out on
calls, serving papers; everybody in the county knew him,
from Laurelville to Murray City."
Sheriff North said the department has been in contact
with the McManaway family. "They're coping with the loss
as well as can be expected," he said.
Fellow officer Gabriel, who was born in 1972, said, "I
always remember Bob in a deputy's uniform." Many
grateful people in the Hocking County community will
remember Deputy McManaway that way, too.
Deputy McManaway is survived by his wife, Sharon
McManaway; his son, Brian (Larrisa) McManaway of Logan;
two daughters, Melodee (Jarrod) Hawk of Hamden and
Tiffany McManaway of Logan; a brother, Gene (Roberta)
Morgan of Logan; and five grandchildren. His son Brian
McManaway also is a deputy for the Hocking County
Sheriff's Department.
