Emergency Beacon Flashing Device
It’s a simple idea that may help save
someone’s life.
Hocking County Sheriff Lanny North has given away "Emergency Beacon Flashing Devices" that can activate ordinary light bulbs to flash on and off. Essentially, the light bulb becomes a flashing signal for help with the flip of a switch.
The Emergency Beacon Flashing Device works like any ordinary light bulb and requires no special wiring or fixtures. Simply affix the device onto any ordinary light bulb, place the bulb into a light socket, flip the light switch twice and it begins to blink. Otherwise, the bulb serves as a regular porch light.
Within the rural areas of Hocking County, addresses are sometimes not clearly marked and mailboxes are grouped together making it difficult to find where people live. The blinking light can pinpoint someone’s location to quickly direct law enforcement and rescue squads responding to an emergency.
Call for Help and let them know your front light will be flashing, then activate your Emergency Beacon Flashing Device. To cancel the flashing light, simply turn the light switch off.
In addition to letting safety forces know at a glance who summoned help, the flashing light can also let neighbors know that something is wrong. And most importantly, it means that once you've called for help, you don't have to leave your home to go outside to signal your location.
Logan Wal-Mart donated $1,000 to the Sheriff's Office to make this latest purchase of devices possible.
Emergency Beacon Flashing Devices are “free” to Hocking County senior citizens and others with medical conditions.
